TrueConf helps improve eye care in Nepal

Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology launched teleophthalmology sessions between remote rural community eye centers and the main hospital located in Kathmandu. With TrueConf, doctors can provide remote digital evaluations and make preliminary diagnoses, improving eye care and allowing for early detection and control of blindness throughout the Himalaya.

Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, recognized as World Health Organization Collaborating Centre, is the national implementing body of the Nepal Eye Program. The organization has established 15 community eye centres (CEC) throughout Nepal in order to provide comprehensive screening and stimulate awareness about general health care.

A recent research has revealed that the prevalence of blindness is high in remote areas due to lack of facilities and treatment, geographical distribution and low economic status. Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology decided to improve eye care in remote districts by creating a teleophthalmology system for remote patient-doctor sessions. The system had to perform well with unstable Internet connection, natively integrate with smartphone-based retinal imaging systems, and ensure the security of confidential information.

TrueConf has become a perfect video conferencing platform for online telemedicine consultations and eye examinations. This solution has drastically improved the quality and performance of healthcare by connecting two rural CECs with the main hospital located in the capital of Nepal. Patients appreciate the convenience of having remote digital evaluations and receiving preliminary diagnoses by an ophthalmologist, while healthcare workers have the right tools for both patient treatment and internal collaboration.
