TrueConf, a leading Eastern European vendor of video conferencing solutions, has announced UltraHD 4K 1-on-1 video calls. This is the first ever solution to provide UltraHD point-to-point video calls along with multipoint video conferencing.

4K FlipboxTrueConf technicians demonstrated the difference between 1-on-1 4K (UltraHD) and FullHD calls at a press conference on June 9 2015. The prototype used for the presentation consisted of a PC with a fourth generation Intel i7 CPU, Point Grey UltraHD camera, and TrueConf Server software displayed on a Polymedia Flipbox smart display for meeting rooms. The point-to-point UltraHD video calls also required a powerful video card and 4Mbit/s bandwidth.

According to TrueConf, their prototype is fundamentally different from those existing in the 4K video conferencing market, as it supports 4K UltraHD video from one participant rather than a collection of video streams from multiple users, with a maximum video resolution of 1080p from each participant. TrueConf developers note that this is a solution in advance of current IT market capabilities.

“An UltraHD video stream from each participant is a great step forward in the market, and it also brings a definitive end to the race for UltraHD video conferencing among video vendors that began in 2014 when we showcased 4K group video conferencing at Integrated Systems Europe 2014.”

Polymedia CTO Igor Isheyev said: “Today, many display system manufacturers can produce large-scale visual systems with diagonals from 80 inches and up. Obviously, with the ‘heavy’ visuals that can easily occur with multiple high resolution streams, it is inefficient to use systems with basic FullHD (1920×1080), since the visual quality on such displays will be very low.”

“Thus, modern large-scale display systems should have a high pixel per inch rate (ppi). Basically, the ‘Age of 4K’ will come not because vendors found out how to make these screens, but because it is a natural demand of the times. One of the problems with promoting 4K technologies was the fact that there were practically no interfaces of adequate quality for transmitting 4K data to displays from the source up until very recent times. However, this issue can be considered resolved and there are no definite factors that could constrain a rapid widespread of 4K technologies,” Mr. Isheyev said.
