We present the results of the annual TrueConf video conferencing market research conducted at “Video+Conference 2014” event. We are impressed by the fact that many users confirm the global tendency of shifting from plain video conferencing towards unified communication systems.

According to the survey, video conferencing has moved beyond the meeting room: 60% of the respondents hold video conferences and make video calls at their workspace, 51% use meeting rooms, and only around 7% of those surveyed rent a hall with a video conferencing system. More than 10% of respondents use video conferencing on their mobile endpoints, which is twice the number of users reported in the 2013 data.

How do you usually organize your video conferencing sessions?

The statistics shows that the respondents are interested in cloud-based video conferencing solutions as a future alternative to on-premises video conferencing systems. Only 44% of the respondents stated their willingness to own a video conferencing system (compared to 49% in 2013, and 70% in 2012). About 10% of respondents already use a cloud service, while 19% use both types of video conferencing solutions.

The results of the survey show that users based in smaller, remote towns prefer flexible and affordable video conferencing solutions based on SVC architecture. A full 37% of remotely surveyed participants use solutions based on the on-premises software with an SVC-enabled server, while 29% use solutions based on the MCU hardware mixer. With in-person survey respondents, we see the reverse situation — 41% of them use video solutions based on the MCU hardware mixer, 20% use cloud-based solutions without SVC, and only 12% use video conferencing solutions based on the on-premises software SVC-enabled server.

Which type of video conferencing infrastructure do you use?

It is interesting that the majority of the — nearly 80%, would like to be able to see up to 10 participants on the video conference screen at a time, but only 14% would like to see more than 15 participants. The study showed that 49% of users are willing to manage the video session themselves and only 40% of them are willing to let a video conferencing administrator manage the session.

The overall results of our research show that want to be always online, choose the devices on their own, and receive high image and sound quality for a reasonable price. That is why cloud-based solutions and flexible SVC ones become more and more popular.

More than 100 IT specialists, CEOs, and leaders within IT departments, enterprises and organizations responded to the survey. More than half of the conference participants are engaged in the education, science, high technologies, information and communication technologies, healthcare and public sectors.
