4K FlipboxOn June 9 2015 we held a press conference dedicated to our prototype solution capable of making UltraHD 4K point-to-point video calls. This demo became our new victory, and we are proud to announce that we are the first in the world to demonstrate a solution of such kind!

Obviously, there is still time necessary for such video conferencing technologies to become widely applied, but this is the case where software exceeded the technical capabilities of modern meeting rooms. We suppose that 4K video conferencing will have a wider demand already in 2016 when more powerful computers, affordable 4K cameras, and the support for the new generation of codecs VP9 and H.265 will appear on the market.

Our 4K prototype consists of a PC with 4th generation Intel i7 CPU on board, Point Grey 4K camera, TrueConf Server Software, and Polymedia Flipbox smart display for meeting rooms to show the content on. Aside from a modern CPU, we have also used a specialized graphics card, and a stable 4Mbit/sec bandwidth channel to perform a 4K point-point video call.

During the press conference on June 9th, journalists were able to see the difference between 1-on-1 video calls in FullHD and UltraHD in person. The main feature is that we support 4K UltraHD video from a single participant, not as a sum of several 1080p video streams.

We at TrueConf think that true 4K video calls can be used in Healthcare and Engineering, along with Telepresence systems. In all aforementioned scenarios ultra-high resolution visuals can make the work of experts notably easier and can create the presence effect as adequate as possible. In recent future, when 4K-grade equipment will become more affordable, we expect the technology to be used in all conference rooms.

An Ultra HD video stream from each participant is a great step forward in the market, and it also brings a definitive end to the race for UltraHD video conferencing among video vendors that began in 2014 when we launched 4K group video conferencing at Integrated Systems Europe 2014.
